One of those commitments was to kick start a dialogue among theatre artists in our community so that we can listen, learn, and tailor our actions to make local impact.

Our initial brainstorm led us to hosting a small discussion group from which we could then identify key focus areas to expand on in future forums. For proper social distancing, we wanted to hold this discussion outside with the intention of recording and sharing to a larger audience. We finally found a sunny day (still with a surprise thunderstorm the moment we started!) and immediately launched into an almost two-hour discussion.

Because of the length, we felt it was best to break up the discussion into smaller "episodes" for our audiences to watch at convenient times throughout their day. We have a working list of future topics, but as we share these episodes, we invite others to please reach out to us (send us an email at gaslighttheatre@gmail.com) if you'd like to be involved!

]]><![CDATA[#blacklivesmatter]]>Sun, 07 Jun 2020 04:00:00 GMThttps://www.gaslight-theatre.org/the-gaslight-channel/blacklivesmatterGaslight Theatre Company is committed to making our theatre community better and strongly stands with #blacklivesmatter. But we know saying it is not enough.

Our board has been having a lot of conversations this past week about how we can support our community immediately and improve as a company. And while we have brainstormed a list of actions, they have been created in our own vacuum.

We believe the first thing we need to do is listen. With that in mind, we are pledging two initial things:
  1. To host a preliminary public forum on June 22 for our local theatre community to learn about shortfalls so we can strategize how we can make actionable change, large and small, to support Black artists and voices. However, we can’t expect one forum to find all the solutions and anticipate holding others.

  2. To producing a classical, under-produced, or original show written by a Black playwright and/or directed by a Black artist in our upcoming season. Gaslight has historically had open call submissions for directors to submit plays they are passionate about, but this time we’re specifically making this call.

We know there is much more we can do in terms of inclusivity on our board, within our play selection, and with outreach. But we truly want to develop a specific and actionable plan to make that happen, which will be our primary objective at our Board Meeting this month. We are INCREDIBLY moved by your generosity; especially in a time when so many efforts need our attention right now (which we intend to pivot back to).

With your help, we were able to raise $6,770 for our #GaslightGoesDowntown Initiative from our fiercest supports near and far (including all the way from California to Northern Ireland!). This is going to greatly help us secure and get settled in our new home. We hope to have some really exciting news to share in the near future, so please stay tuned!

From this money raised, we are proud to be donating $1,700 to the Peace and Justice Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania, an interfaith organization created to educate groups and individuals in peaceful ways of resolving conflict, to nurture dialogue among diverse groups, and to be a partner in the ongoing struggle for human rights and a just world.

]]><![CDATA[NEPA Gives + peace and justice]]>Wed, 03 Jun 2020 21:59:28 GMThttps://www.gaslight-theatre.org/the-gaslight-channel/nepa-gives-peace-and-justiceWhile we’re excited to be fundraising for our own cause, we’re simultaneously grappling with how we can do more to support our community. With that in mind, we’ll be re-directing 25% of all money raised during #NEPAGives this Friday to the Peace and Justice Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania. It’s not enough, but we hope that while we have this platform, we can do as much good as we can.

We are very excited to be participating in the NEPA Gives event, a one-day online giving extravaganza that's all about giving back to our community. As you might know, we were displaced from our home almost two years ago and have spent this time diligently searching for a new one, and Friday’s effort is now the launching pad of our renewed fundraising initiative: #GaslightGoesDowntown, which you can read more about on our giving page. We hope you’ll consider donating any amount (seriously, even $10 is amazing!) to help us secure our new home in Downtown Wilkes-Barre.
